Below are the results for the first three years of operations. Much has been achieved and the future looks even better. However, they do not tell the full story as there have been many teething problems to solve en route and various difficulties to deal with. The weather has been of particular note, October to December 2005, where different parts of the coastline have been unworkable with cyclone warnings and high tides, for days , if not weeks at a time, in different parts of the country at different times. Hence the reason for longer courses than planned, or the delay in starting them. As well as this there are the problems of communications, both telephonic and travel.
The situation in the North and East of the island continues to be a problem. As of late the situation has deteriorated to such an extent it has been unable to start the building work on the permanent pool in Tricomalee and until the situation improves dramatically, sadly the building work is at a standstill.
July showed a new and exciting direction for Swimlanka with the start of a pilot project in the Sambodhi home for the disabled. The home has over 60 live in residents with a further 150 on day admittance. We saw this as an opportunity to start an ongoing project to help the less advantaged persons of Sri Lanka.
The Trustees feel that the rate at which the children of the Sri Lankan coast benefit from the SwimLanka courses will undoubtedly increase as the first 4 districts consolidate and the next 4 will all have started to operate or will be shortly after the New Year. In addition to this, the first two 25 meter pools (part of Project Phase 2) look set to start building in September 2006 or the next month, with another one close behind!
The Trustees are very grateful for all the support SwimLanka has been given, not only financially but also in kind and morally!
